Silvercorp recognizes that our continued success is dependent on our ongoing commitment to sustainable development, as well as ensuring safe workplaces for all our employees and contractors.
We are dedicated to fulfilling the Company’s environmental goals and responsibilities and complying with applicable industry standards, legislation and regulations.
As such, the Company has implemented new initiatives to protect the environment and the health and safety of its workers, and to support local communities.
Silvercorp is committed to building green mines and strictly adheres to its “Resource Development and Utilization Plan” and its “Mine Environment Protection and Restoration Plan”, by employing the latest design, construction and management practices to ensure our mining environment undergoes timely rehabilitation.
The Company has been recognized for its ecological efforts and achievements by national and provincial environmental agencies and communities in China. In 2015, Silvercorp’s SGX mine was recognized as “The National Green Mine”, one of the first mines in China to achieve such recognition.
Since 2017, Silvercorp has invested millions of dollars towards programs to protect the surrounding environment, including land reclamation, environmental restoration and treatment projects, and the reforestation of more than 200,000 square metres.
Silvercorp adheres to the regulatory requirements regarding tailings management to protect the environment and our people. Extensive planning and ongoing investments are made at our Ying and GC mine sites to ensure this is achieved throughout the mines’ lifecycles, and these facilities are operating within their permitted design criteria.
Tailings management facilities are subject to regular inspection by the Company and regulators, with whom our management has regular, constructive dialogue to stay abreast of potential new developments and determine how best to address any changes. Recently our GC Mine, which currently utilizes a dry-stack tailings facility, proceeded with the construction of a paste backfill plant which will redirect a significant portion of the mill tailings back underground to be used as fill for mined out areas.
Silvercorp has prepared the disclosure included in the link below regarding our existing tailings dam management practices at each of our sites in response to a request from the Church of England. We attest that the information contained therein is true to the best of our management’s knowledge, based on our governance, technical and review systems.
